Happy to answer questions for folks who haven’t followed this as closely, but the DEA is the act that included the money that funded the competitive grant that was cancelled early last year.

Hi, All!
I am writing to share that in the President's proposed budget for FY2027<https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/budget_fy2027.pdf>, the administration has zeroed out aka rescinded the funds Congress appropriated for the Digital Equity Act (DEA) in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). (You can find the reference at the bottom of page 9)

While the Administration 'canceled' the Digital Equity Act last year and terminated the existing grants, the funds have remained with Commerce because they were appropriated by Congress in the IIJA. That meant the program could be reinstated if the Administration chose to, or was encouraged to do so by Congress or the courts. If Congress accepts the administration's proposal and includes this line item in its budget, then Congress would be approving the full and final cancellation of DEA grant programs, and the funds would not be available to reinstate the program in the future.

There are many more steps in the federal budgeting process, so this is not final; there is still time to advocate that this does not happen. We'll share some resources and tools for doing so soon.
